Record-Breaking Vessels Call at Port of Melbourne’s Swanson Dock

25 October 2024 – Port of Melbourne is proud to welcome the largest ever vessel to call at the Port’s Swanson Dock. The Seaspan Breeze arrived this morning, setting a new benchmark at 337 metres in length and 48.2 metres in beam. The vessel was welcomed by Port of Melbourne’s tenant at Swanson Dock East, Patrick Terminals.

Michael Jovicic, CEO of Patrick Terminals, commented on the historic event: “The arrival of the Seaspan Breeze is a milestone that demonstrates the strength of our infrastructure and our capacity to handle larger vessels as needed. The coordination between our team, Port of Melbourne, Ports Victoria, and our partners ensures that we can continue to meet our customers’ requirements with world-class services. We are committed to investing in our terminal capabilities to continue to deliver operational excellence.”

The milestone comes just days after CMA CGM Volga arrived at Swanson Dock East. With an impressive capacity of 10,622 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units), the CMA CGM Volga broke the record as the largest container vessel by TEU capacity to visit Swanson Dock.

Port of Melbourne CEO Saul Cannon remarked, “Port of Melbourne congratulates our tenant, Patrick Terminals, for welcoming two record-breaking vessels at Swanson Dock East – an achievement that showcases the terminal’s operational capability and efficiency.”

Port of Melbourne wishes to thank and congratulate Patrick Terminals, Ports Victoria, Port Phillip Sea Pilots, Svitzer, SeaPort OPX, Stantec, and Highwater Marine for the successful coordination of this historic achievement.

Mr Cannon added, “We are proud to continually invest in the Port’s capacity to handle larger vessels, including at Swanson Dock, and we look forward to continuing to work with our tenants and broader stakeholders to build Victoria’s supply chain resilience.”

Port of Melbourne’s investment into increasing capacity at Swanson Dock East includes the recently completed 150T Bollards Stage 2 Project, which involved upgrading four 50T bollards at Berth 1 to 150T bollards.

The project forms part of the Big Ship Strategy developed in 2018, supporting the Port’s investment to enable vessels larger than the historical design vessel of 300 metres length over all (LOA) to access the Port, including Swanson Dock.
